windsurfing, or boardsailing or sailboarding
Water sport combining elements of surfing and
sailing. The windsurfer stands on a board
2.5-4 m/8-13 ft long, which is propelled and
steered by means of a sail attached to a mast
that is articulated at the foot. The sport
was first developed in the USA in 1968. Since
1984 the sport has been included in the
Olympic Games as part of the yachting events.
Using the Lechner board, speeds in excess of
40 knots have been achieved. From 1992 men
and women will have to compete in their
individual categories. There are also annual
boardsailing world championships. The 1990
winners of the Lechner class world
championship were (men) Michel Quinten
(France) and (women) Penny Way (UK).
